Dennis DeYoung - Unplugged

First, let’s start with the venue – what a perfect place for ANY show, rock, unplugged, stage shows, symphonies. Admittedly, this is not a great ornate theatre of Chicago theatre district fame – BUT – it IS a very nice looking modern day facility. Comfortable seats, not too big, excellent acoustics, and EVERY seat in the house is a good seat including the balcony. The front row, literally touches the stage.
Now, also, Styx, founded by Chicago South Siders, Dennis DeYoung and the Panozzo Brothers – so what better place for this concert?Now, onto the concert. As the title suggests, it is unplugged. The band featured 2 acoustic 6-strings, an acoustic 5-string bass, and Dennis DeYoung on Grand Piano.
At some point in the show, Dennis confessed to the audience he is 64. But you know what, you would NEVER guess that while watching this concert. He can play the piano better than practically everybody anywhere, regardless of age. He played songs written for keyboards (you know, the nice plastic keys that only need a light touch) on the giant grand piano. He played ballads, rockers, and everything else. His piano skills are unsurpassed by anybody. Absolutely amazing!
His voice – and this is the honest truth here – his voice is just as strong as it was on Styx’s very first album. His vocal range and presence has not diminished one single bit – at all - I repeat AT ALL.
His stage presence – well, come on, it’s Dennis DeYoung – a showman from the word go. Which is exactly what we’d expect. Not a show-off – there is a big difference – but a showman. Dennis DeYoung, always shunned the spotlight and applause and passed it on to his band (who rightfully deserved it - as did he!)
His band – now that we mention them. WOW. The acoustic guitarists were playing riffs in the 20th fret on ACOUSTIC GUITARS without cutouts. And they were playing them perfectly. These guys were playing the famous Styx rockers like Come Sail Away, Renegade, Best Of Times, etc etc – on acoustic, but just as fast and with just as many notes as if they had electric 6-string lead guitars.
Impressive doesn’t even begin to describe them. This also includes the acoustic bass player who broke into a funky slap bass groove during one song which brought mid-song cheers from the audience.
And, let’s also point out, if Dennis ever decides to stop music (man, we sure hope not) – he always has a job as a comedian. The interludes between songs were flat out hilarious. One particular one, Dennis asked the crowd the standard insert-city-here type line with “How many here from the South Side?” - and as expected, the crowd erupted. Then he asked “How many from the North Side?”, to which quite a few responded (a good showing, to be fair). To which Dennis quipped “Man, we better tighten up those toll booths!” Yes indeed, Dennis DeYoung representing the South Side as any good South Sider will!!
They played pretty much all the classic Styx hits – opening with Rocking The Paradise and closing with Best Of Times. And I can’t think of ANY BETTER way to start and end an acoustic night of Dennis DeYoung singing Styx songs, than with those two Paradise Theater songs. (although, there is a concert spoiler below related to this)
Aside from playing all the classics, Dennis also gave little stories before (or after) each song, and the audience who listened attentively truly appreciated these stories, some I think we might have heard for the first time ever. I honestly don’t remember the playlist – I just remember thinking to myself - “This is definitely going to make my personal Top 5 Favorite concerts lists, even surpassing the first time I saw him with an orchestra, and the 2 times I saw him with Styx”.
In addition to his comedy - there were also some great shout-outs. In one story, Dennis gives a nod to the Beatles and Abbey Road. (so, for all those Beatles-haters, like them or not, you can not deny they were influential, and maybe the MOST influential band of all time). There was a shoutout to long-time Chicago DJ Kevin Matthews..."is it wrong!" - this of course caused fans to yell Freebird! Ah, Kevin Matthews, even Dennis DeYoung misses you - COME BACK TO CHICAGO!
As you can tell, this was more than just Dennis playing classic Styx – this was an enjoyable 2 hour and 10 minute performance (without intermission) complete with “lead solos” on acoustic 6-strings). And of course, plenty of awesome piano solos by Dennis.
To sum it up – THIS GUY (and his band) ARE ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL. To be 100% honest, this was the best rendition of Styx songs I have ever seen or heard, and that includes when I saw Dennis with an orchestra, and when I saw Styx perform Paradise Theater as a concept concert. Amazing – amazing – amazing. Can't say it enough - Amazing!
Dennis DeYoung is just as good now (maybe even better) than he ever has been in his career. I could talk about this show for 2 hours and 10 minutes!!!

By the way, they didn’t “completely” end the show with Best Of Times – they actually medley’d that song into “The End” by The Beatles, and the lyrics and notes of the Beatles ended the Dennis DeYoung/Styx concert. As a Beatles fan, I can say honestly, I got chills then – and I’m getting chills now.

WOW!! That sounds like an incredible experience. I would have loved to see that!!! I did check his tour gigs to see if he was coming to our area. However, it seems his next gigs are up in Canada. Which is interesting because the Mellencamp tour is headed that way at about the same time.
Maybe they'll run into each other for a jam...YA NEVER KNOW!!!
